Where It Started

I once moved into a home with a completely open backyard. No trees, no structural definition, and absolutely no privacy. Looking out from the patio, the space felt entirely exposed—less like a personal retreat and more like an unfinished lot.

My first instinct wasn’t to build a stark perimeter fence to shut out the neighborhood. I wanted light, airflow, and a connection to the landscape. But I also needed a place that felt grounded and complete.

As a designer, I realized the underlying problem wasn't just a lack of privacy—it was a total absence of architectural scale. Modern yards are large, but standard retail garden décor is small, flimsy, and purely decorative. There was a massive gap between a blank lawn and a high-cost custom landscape architect.

So, I started sketching.

I began engineering substantial, clean-lined landscape elements designed to visually anchor an outdoor space. What started as heavy-framed Western Red Cedar trellises to create soft privacy quickly evolved into a broader design methodology. I realized that to turn open space into a true personal habitat to recharge, you need a cohesive system of structural elements—rhythm beneath your feet with architectural concrete, depth with integrated planters, and verticality with modular screens.

When neighbors began stopping their cars to ask where the structures came from, it confirmed a shared frustration: homeowners know their outdoor spaces are missing something, but they don't want to build a wall to get it.

Today, Fortis Peak designs and builds substantial, made-to-order landscape elements that bridge the gap between architecture and nature.
